Kansas has a thriving and diverse advanced manufacturing sector, supported by the state’s friendly business environment, low costs of doing business and a technically skilled workforce. Wichita is known as the “Air Capital of the World” because of the storied aviation manufacturing cluster located in the city, which features a strong partnership between industry, the National Center for Aviation Training, the National Institute for Aviation Research and one of the largest and most experienced aerospace labor pools and supplier networks in the world.
The work of the aerospace industry in aircraft component design and fabrication has cultivated an expertise in composites that has led to advances in other key manufacturing industries in the state. These include medical devices, automotive components, wind turbines, marine applications, construction materials, machinery, scientific instrumentation and consumer products. As a result, south-central Kansas has a growing industrial cluster of businesses in the advanced materials and polymers fields.
